Corkscrew

Cork

A cheat gainer with a single twist. The cork is both extremely aesthetic and extremely common. It's arguably the most classic trick in all of tricking - not only because of its popularity - but also because it was one of the first moves to be invented by trickers and not borrowed from another movement discipline.

Cheat Gainer
Butterfly Twist

Key Positions & Pathways

Swing Through & Hip Drive

Swing your leg as vertically as you can while driving your hips open to the side. Depending on the type of cork you are trying to do, you may drop your left shoulder (for left-twisters) or keep them both high.If you choose to drop your shoulder, avoid arching the back - doing so creates an energy leakage. You can help initiate the flip instead by pushing your hips forward.Because of the limited range of motion of the hip joint, your swing leg will naturally follow a slanted axis. But despite this, still try to swing as straight as possible. This is somewhat counterintuitive, but swinging straighter lets your hips open more, which in turn helps you rotate more efficiently.

Common Mistakes

Missing Swing

Your cork looks like a one-leg full.

Cause of Mistake

You are most likely jumping off of your plant leg instead of doing a swing through. This mistake may arise from the misunderstanding that setting should involve getting the hips elevated as soon as possible.

How to Fix

Instead of jumping, focus instead on simultaneously driving your swing leg up and your plant leg down and back. When done correctly, you shouldn't leave the ground until your swing leg reaches full extension.

Progressions

Cork-Axis Gainer

Start by getting used to the cork's axis - allowing your hips to open to the side while you swing as high as you can. This will create some rotation which may cause the gainer to land like an aerial or even in semi.Make sure you ride the swing! Stay grounded during the swing, and after leaving the ground continue to hold your leg high - almost as if it were a one-leg pike. Done correctly, you should barely have to jump.
